Doula Information and Referral Services

Our Doula referral list is comprised of Doula's who share OPCRC's vision of making pregnancy support services available to those who might otherwise be unable to access them due to financial constraints.  This means that all the Doula's on our referral list are willing to meet with clients on their own terms, with supports and payment expectations tailored to each Mother on an individual basis.

Support in Pregnancy: Doula support can begin at any time in pregnancy and will include a series of visits with the purpose of getting to know your Doula and having a chance to work through the emotional side of pregnancy and birth. Partners are encouraged to join in visits, as are any friends or family members who play a major support role to the mother. The Doula’s role during pregnancy is to encourage and support the mother- so that she may feel fully prepared for the challenges and joys of bringing a child into the world. Examples of topics to be covered during Doula visits include:

  • Practical tips on preparing for and coping with the physical and emotional stresses of labour,
  • the important role of supporting birth ‘partners’ for both the mother and baby,
  • physical changes during pregnancy and labour and what to expect of your body and emotions during that time.

Support during Labour: Labour support is the cornerstone of a Birth Doula’s role. She is there as a continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother during labour and birth. The Doula is not there to replace the partner, but brings her valuable experience and knowledge of birth as a resource not only to the mother but also to other support partners. She is able to give helpful encouragement and suggestions to those present who may be a bit uncertain as to what their support of the mother should look like in the intensity of the birth process.

Support after Birth: The Doula’s role after birth is, as always, tailored to meet the mothers needs- she may be a resource for breast feeding advice or simply a friend to talk to.

“I really appreciated the great information that I received from Janelle and her support through my c- section and especially afterward.”

“I loved having Nadine there with me to help coach me. It was such a wonderful experience. Thank you. I have also enjoyed coming to the mum’s group to be with other mother’s and get support.
